Playlist: Skipper and Me

The story is set in Naples, Florida, and introduces Barry Pope, a retired professional baseball player. While relaxing on the beach, Barry encounters a stray dog – a mix of Whippet and Rhodesian Ridgeback. The dog, initially unnamed, shows a friendly demeanor and an uncanny ability to play fetch.
Barry, feeling a connection with the dog, invites him to a Little League practice he’s coaching. There, the dog impresses everyone with his baseball skills, catching fly balls with ease. This reminds Barry of his own past in professional baseball, evoking both fond memories and a sense of loneliness from his playing days.
Deciding to keep the dog, Barry brings him home to his modest house. As they settle in, Barry is reminded of his old manager, Walt “Skipper” Anderson, by the dog’s behavior and appearance. This leads him to name the dog Skipper.
